A dog pack is an ideal choice for many dog owners when backpacking, cross country skiing, mountain biking, or just walking home from the market with the dog. A right kind of dog pack means your pet will help you ease up with some load, which otherwise you will need to increase on your backpack. Experts agree on the fact that a healthy dog
can carry about ΒΌ of their own body weight in a properly fitting dog pack. The right kind of dog packs helps your pet to carry the load with ease and without discomfort.
While selecting a pack for your dog, consider one that is large enough to carry the proper load. The dog pack should allow plenty of ground clearance and let the dog lay down and rest without discomfort, even when fully loaded. Panniers in the pack should permit the dog's elbows to move normally. The dog packs should not have a strap behind the dog's elbows, as this is a sensitive area - especially on shorthaired dogs. The straps on the dog packs should be very comfortable, and loose enough to insert a finger underneath. Check strap fit when your dog is standing, sitting, laying down and after water breaks. Straps only keep the pack from sliding around and do not carry weight. Packs that move a lot are probably too loose or poorly balanced and should be avoided. A proper dog pack is the one which once properly adjusted rarely needs to checked.
